  1. In this tutorial I will show you how to create a fairy composition with a fairy on a flower. In the beginning, we will prepare the background and change its color. After that, we will add a butterfly, a flower, a child and wings made of leaves. Then we'll adjust the lighting, refine the colors and add some effects. As a final touch we will apply adjustment layers.

Download the archive with the materials for the lesson

Note: The author used paid materials. In the archive you will find an alternative version of the images to perform the lesson.

    1. Let's create a document
    STEP 1
Create a new document (Ctrl+N) of size 2204 x 1666 pixels and fill it with white, using, for example, Paint Bucket Tool (G) (Fill). Download a picture for the background and drag it to the working document. You can drag and drop it from a folder on your computer into the program window. Or open the image in Photoshop (Ctrl+O) and use the Move Tool (V) (Move) to drag it into the working document. Place the photo at the top of the document, right-click on it and choose Convert to Smart Object.

    STEP 2.
Go to Filter - Blur - Gaussian Blur and set the Radius to 15 pixels. With the blur we add volume to the composition and separate the foreground from the background. The radius value depends on the size of your document and the sources used.

    STEP 3.
Next, go to Layer - New Adjustment Layer - Hue/Saturation. By pressing Ctrl+Alt+G turn the layer into a clipping mask. Adjust the Master setting:

    STEP 4
Open the picture of the butterflies and use the Lasso Tool (L) to select any butterfly you like. Cut it to a new layer (Ctrl+J) and drag it to the working document. Using free transformation (Ctrl+T), rotate the butterfly and flip it horizontally Edit - Transform - Flip Horizontal (Edit - Transform - Flip Horizontal). Place the butterfly in the upper part of the document closer to the center.

    STEP 5.
At the bottom of the Layers panel, click the second button to add a mask on the layer with the butterfly. With the B key, activate the Brush tool, choose a stiff black brush and stroke over the wings to hide them. If you made an extra stroke, you can undo the last action with Ctrl+Z, or switch to white and restore the desired detail.
